By simulating war, early peoples were able to strategize and prepare. Obviously, when chess was used for war purposes it was much different and way more complicated. Over the years though the game evolved into what it is today. Modern chess is a game that has reached the hearts of many with its strategic nature, unique rules, subtleties, nuances, and variety in which games take on as no two games of chess are ever the same. By becoming such a popular hobby, people have begun to up their chess game by purchasing extravagant and beautiful looking chess boards. While there are many cool chess boards you can find in stores and online, there are some that stand above the rest. Below is a list of the top 10 coolest chess boards in the world.

This chess set was made by a company appropriately called “Giant Chess”. Giant Chess creates huge chess sets of all different sizes. The one you see in the picture isn’t even their largest one. This set is more beautiful than cool, but we had to put it on the list because how cosmetically appealing it is. As you can see, the squares on the board are not directly next to each other. This makes this chess set unique because you rarely ever see a chess board where the square are not connected to one another. The design of the board is robustly modern as you can see the shape which has rounded corners, a 100% transparent finish, and chess pieces that are mostly transparent glass. Piece are identifiable by shapes in the top of the glass. As you can see, for the black pawns they are demarcated with an upside down triangle at the top. For the white pawns you have a white square. Three man chess is a twist on the classic board game. Instead having to reach the end of the board to turn a pawn into a queen, you have to reach the center of circular board. What’s great about this twist on traditional chess is that it preserves the same rules of the game. To play you do not need to learn any new rules. Also, it uses the same 16 pieces as traditional chess. All of which move the same way as traditional chess. For example, the rook can only move vertically or horizontally. However, since the board is arranged in a circle the Rook can move circularly and vertically. Circularly is the same as horizontally on a circular board. Even if you are a guy who likes to play regular chess, you will still enjoy this game since the only difference is a circular board and 3 player format.

While all the same rules apply and nothing has changed, the height differences in the squares make visualizing upcoming moves difficult. Modeled after the chess set that appeared in a infamous star trek episode, this chess set has multiple platforms. In order to win, you have to come up with new and cunning strategies to capture the enemies pieces. This is so hard to describe that you would really have to play on it yourself to understand just how amazing and intricate this chess set is.
